Blu-ray is a next generation optical storage medium developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association which can hold up to 25 GB of data on a single layer.

Blu-ray is a next generation optical storage medium developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association which can hold up to 25 GB of data on a single layer. Dual-layer, quad-layer, and eight-layer versions of the disc have also been announced, with capacities of 50, 100, and 200 GB respectively.
Blu-ray is currently in competition with HD-DVD for the control of the next generation of optical media. Both technologies use blue lasers (which is the origin of the name Blu-ray), this has a wavelength shorter than red lasers used for DVD and CD meaning smaller pits, smaller gaps and less waste of recording layer space, therefore more storage space.
Sony, one of the biggest companies behind Blu-ray, will equip the Playsation 3 with a Blu-ray drive and many studios have signed up to distribute films using the medium.
