MP4 files can have the following extensions:
.mp4 - official extension
.m4v - .mp4 files with the WRONG extension introduced by Apple for video+audio files, .m4v can be safely renamed to .mp4 (.m4v is used in Apple iTunes and iPod)
.m4a - .mp4 files with the WRONG extension introduced by Apple for audio-only files, .m4a can safely be renamed to .mp4
.m4p - used by Apple iTunes for DRM protected files
.m4e - renamed .sdp files used by Envivio for streaming
.m4v, .mp4v, .cmp, .divx, .xvid, .264 - normally raw mpeg-4 video streams (not inside MP4)
.3gp, .3g2 - used by mobile phones, can also include content not defined for .mp4 (H.263, AMR)
You can play streamed MP4 without the need to install a player (!) with the java applets from: MediaFrame, IBM
IBM Toolkit for MPEG-4
The IBM Toolkit for MPEG-4 consists of a set of JavaTM classes and APIs with five sample applications: three cross-platform playback applications and two tools for generating MPEG-4 content for use with MPEG-4-compliant devices. These applications are as follows:
AVgen: a simple, easy-to-use GUI tool for creating audio/video-only content for ISMA- or 3GPP-compliant devices
XMTBatch: a tool for creating rich MPEG-4 content beyond simple audio and video
M4Play: an MPEG-4 client playback application
M4Applet for ISMA: a Java player applet for ISMA-compliant content
M4Applet for HTTP: a Java applet for MPEG-4 content played back over HTTP.
Download IBM Toolkit for MPEG-4 - Since the toolkit is Java-based, the client applications and the content creation applications are cross-platform and will run on any Java-supporting platform, including Linux.
